On Tuesday, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer from New York urged the FBI to carry out an assessment concerning potential threats linked to the files of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He expressed concern that foreign entities might exploit this information against President Trump or other notable figures.
Schumer remarked, “Whatever you have in Epstein’s files is clearly so troublesome that Donald Trump doesn’t want to touch on this issue on a 10-foot pole,” implying that the contents could be damaging.
He raised questions about the implications of an adversary using cyber methods to make matters worse for Trump and his associates, especially if they gained access to sensitive information surrounding Epstein. “What happens if Epstein’s documents end up with governments like China, Russia, or North Korea?” he asked rhetorically.
Schumer suggested that without public disclosure of Epstein’s files, there might be material that could be leveraged by foreign enemies to blackmail high-profile individuals, including the president.
He is keen on having the FBI evaluate the risks posed by potential foreign access to the Epstein Files, specifically whether foreign intelligence could breach these files through cyber intrusions.
Additionally, he hopes the FBI will identify any weaknesses that could be exploited for leverage against Trump, his family, or other officials.
Schumer called for increased transparency from law enforcement agencies, urging them to demonstrate that they are developing strategies to mitigate these threats and safeguard national security.
During a press conference in Scotland on Monday, Trump remarked that he had distanced himself from Epstein over two decades ago after learning about “something inappropriate.” He mentioned that Epstein had hired an employee from Mar-A-Lago, which led to their falling out.
Trump recounted, “He stole people who worked for me. I said, ‘Never do it again.’ He did it again, and I drove him out of the place, Persona Non Grata.” He seemed satisfied with that decision, adding, “If you want to know the truth, I’m happy you did it.”
He also claimed he had declined an invitation from Epstein to visit his private island in the Caribbean, stating, “I’ve never been to the island and Bill Clinton probably went there.”
White House Communications Director Stephen Chan commented last week that Trump had “kicked” Epstein out of his club years ago because he found him to be a “creep.”
