Sgt. Slaughter Backs Sidney Sweeney Amid Backlash
A wrestling icon has come out in support of actress Sidney Sweeney after she faced criticism over her ads for American Eagle. The backlash seems to have intensified recently, with many people voicing their complaints online.
Sgt. Slaughter, a WWE Hall of Famer, took to social media to issue a playful directive to Sweeney. He wrote, “Attention Sidney Sweeney, you’re going to girls, and that’s an order!” Slaughter, whose real name is Robert Remus, has had a long career in professional wrestling, spanning from 1972 to 2014, with occasional appearances since then.
Sweeney found herself in hot water due to a campaign for American Eagle, which bears the slogan, “Sidney Sweeney has great jeans.” The ad generated controversy as some critics charged that the phrase promotes unrealistic body standards, likening it to “Nazi propaganda.”
In a recent promotional clip for American Eagle on Instagram, the 27-year-old star of “Euphoria” was seen adjusting the ad, changing “genes” to “jeans” before departing. This action didn’t sit well with all audiences, leading to a wave of criticisms.
Columnist CJ Pearson came to her defense in a piece for Fox News Digital, stating that the uproar indicates a deeper issue within some segments of society. He argued, “She’s young, hot, white, and blonde, so they’re angry at the corporation finally acknowledging this.” Pearson asserted that many are frustrated with the company’s success in capitalizing on this narrative.
Interestingly, American Eagle’s stock initially surged past $12 amidst the controversy but later fell below that mark as the situation unfolded further.
