Jets coaches commend Aaron Glenn for emphasizing tackling at the start of training camp

The Jets held a practice on Monday, which is a bit atypical for NFL teams.

And things got intense.

“There are fine lines, so I love it,” said defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes. “People often worry about injuries. It’s football. But I told the coaching staff, especially the defensive guys, that I’d keep an eye on the first few games.”

“Coach Aaron Glenn is doing an excellent job preparing us for what we might face. Some players might not take part in the preseason, so when the season starts, I’m not sure how they’re expected to be ready. But I really appreciate the effort.”

I get that defensive players get a thrill from tackling, but what’s in it for the offensive coaches?

“I truly think we’re on the right path,” said offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. “We talk about explosive plays, right? Getting those big moments.”

“Well, one of those involves running after catching the ball, giving players space. We have the talent to make that happen. The best way to succeed is simply to practice it.”

Engstrand also highlighted rookie right tackle Armand Membou.

“He’s facing challenges, as is expected. But we’re seeing some mental errors; it’s not completely absent. That’s a good sign.”

“We’ve put in a lot of new plays. He’s managed the nearly complete installation really well, along with his teammates.”

A key moment during Thursday’s practice was a one-on-one drill in the red zone.

Wide receiver Garrett Wilson faced off against cornerback Sauce Gardner, each taking two attempts. Wilson managed to score a touchdown in the corner of the end zone even with tight coverage on the first play. On the second attempt, Gardner successfully broke up the pass.
