Cooper Leads Whatley in North Carolina Senate Race

Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) holds a lead over Republican National Committee’s Michael Whatley as the two appear set for a broader electoral contest.

A recent poll by Emerson College published on Friday shows Cooper with a 6-point advantage, garnering 47% of support compared to Whatley’s 41%, while 12% of voters remain undecided. Cooper’s established recognition in the state is substantial; a notable 84% of respondents are aware of his stance, which may give him an edge over Whatley.

Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, remarked on Whatley’s low name recognition, suggesting that it presents both difficulties and opportunities. “About two-thirds of voters don’t know enough about him,” he pointed out. “This leaves space for his campaign to shape his image before Cooper can.”

Over half of those surveyed view Cooper positively, while around a third have a negative perception. What’s noteworthy is that only 17% think favorably of Whatley, with 16% viewing him unfavorably, indicating that his overall favorability is neutral.

As campaigns unfold, it’s typical for voter familiarity with candidates to grow, though the effects on race-specific voting habits may remain unclear.

Cooper’s support is particularly strong among independent voters, leading by 19 points at 47% to 28%. He also shows a commanding 25-point lead among younger voters under 50, achieving 54% against Whatley’s 29%. In contrast, Whatley shows a slight edge among those over 50, with 52% to Cooper’s 41%.

With both candidates actively campaigning this week, this is one of the initial indicators of the general election landscape. Each candidate seems poised as a strong contender for their party’s nomination, suggesting a competitive race ahead.

Cooper officially entered the race on Monday after much speculation, raising an impressive $3.4 million within 24 hours. For Democrats, the seat currently held by retired Senator Tom Tillis (RN.C.) is seen as a prime target for potential gains in the 2026 elections.

Whatley announced his candidacy with backing from President Trump, receiving quick endorsements from key Senate GOP figures including Senate Majority Leader John Thune (Rs.D.) and Senate Republican Campaign Committee Chairman Sen. Tim Scott (Rs.C.).

This poll was conducted from June 28-30 among 1,000 registered voters, with a margin of error of 3% points.
