McBride: 'Voters believe Democrats have been somewhat unkind to them'

Rep. Sarah McBride’s Reflections on Democratic Strategy

Rep. Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware, has stated that the party has struggled to connect with voters, citing a sense of insensitivity. “I think voters feel like Democrats are in their hole,” she reflected in a recent interview with Dasha Burns.

McBride, who made history as the first transgender member of Congress when elected in November, emphasized critical questions that voters consider at the polls. “The first question is, is this candidate like me?” she noted.

If voters can’t relate to a candidate, McBride believes they’ll skip to the next question, which is about their views on the party and candidate. “I think we’ve lost that first question,” she added with concern.

Despite her election success, the Democratic Party faced setbacks in significant national races, including the presidency. As the midterm elections and the 2028 presidential election approach, party members are actively seeking ways to re-engage voters.

For McBride, the focus is on uniting working-class Americans. “I think we must basically create a united tent based on three basic principles,” she explained during the interview. “One is that workers need more support and help. Two, democracy and freedom are good.”

Delaware Democrats are working to erase negative perceptions and confront online rhetoric that tends to alienate various groups. “The reality today is that your party’s ecosystem often defines some of the loudest voices within it,” she said, emphasizing the importance of a diverse and inclusive dialogue. She pointed out that if loud voices within the party embarrass those from different backgrounds, it sends a message to a wide array of potential voters.
