Virginia Councillor Allegedly Set on Fire in Attack
A disturbing incident unfolded involving a member of the Danville City Council, Lee Vogler, who was allegedly attacked with gasoline and set on fire. Reports suggest that the attack was intended to be fatal, as indicated in official documents.
Vogler, 39, was working at Showcase Magazine when the assailant, 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buckhayes, reportedly forced him into the building, doused him with five-gallon buckets of gasoline, and lit a fire. The Danville Police were informed, and Vogler identified Hayes, who was apprehended by authorities a short distance from the scene after fleeing.
Hayes later revealed to the police that his intention was for Vogler to perish in the fire. Court records have charged Hayes with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. Currently, he is not being held at the Danville City Jail.
After the attack, Vogler was airlifted to a medical facility, but details about his current condition remain unclear.
Authorities noted that Vogler and Hayes were acquainted, and the episode reportedly stemmed from “personal issues” that were unrelated to Vogler’s political affiliations or his position on the City Council.
Vogler, elected to the Danville City Council in May 2012 at the age of 24, is recognized as one of the youngest council members in the area’s history. His wife, Blair, shared an update through social media, expressing confidence in her husband’s resilience. She described Vogler as a fighter, emphasizing his unwavering spirit and determination during this challenging time.
The incident has raised significant concern among the community and officials alike, leaving many to reflect on the gravity of such a violent act occurring within local civic offices.
