Moreno Threatens to Withdraw Federal Funds Over Cincinnati Brawl
Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) hinted at pulling federal funds from Cincinnati following a viral video that captured a violent incident on city streets at 3 AM.
The altercation, which happened on Saturday, resulted in serious injuries to one woman during a physical scuffle between two men, drawing in others who escalated the conflict.
While five individuals face charges related to the brawl, only two arrests have been made as of Tuesday.
Moreno has criticized local officials for failing to act swiftly in response to the situation, though police stated at least one person did call 911 to report the violence.
“I’m headed there next week to deliver a letter. They will have 30 days to develop a plan to ensure civil rights for all citizens, regardless of race,” Moreno stated during an appearance on “The Benny Show.”
He added, “If they don’t comply, I’ll urge all federal agencies to halt funding to Cincinnati. That would be tough for me because Cincinnati is a wonderful city, and I want to support it.”
His comments are part of a broader critique of local leadership, which includes stinging remarks from Vice President Vance’s half-brother, Corey Bowman. Bowman criticized city manager Cheryl Long, who is a woman of color, suggesting she should be removed due to her perceived inaction.
Moreno stated, “We must draw a line in the sand. We can’t let our city be overrun by these militants.”
Conversely, some local officials expressed a vastly different perspective on the brawl.
Cincinnati City Council Speaker Pro Tem Victoria Parks commented on the viral video, saying, “They begged for that beatdown! I appreciate getting the full story.”
These remarks were met with disapproval from Mayor Aftab Pureval and others.
“I disagree with Victoria Parks’ statements. No one should be a victim of violent crime,” Pureval remarked. He added, “I feel furious about the brutal fight that occurred downtown. It’s frightening and absolutely unacceptable for any community member.”
