Eight Men Alleged Sexual Assault by Christian Rock Star Michael Tait

Accusations Against Michael Tate

Michael Tate, known as the lead singer of the Christian bands DC Talk and Newsboys, is facing allegations of sexual assault from eight men.

Initially, six men had accused him, but now two additional accusers have come forward, including Jason Jones, who was the founding manager of the band Evanescence. Jones shared with a newspaper that he lost his position in 1999 after discussing his experiences with Tate.

“It destroyed me,” Jones expressed. “I was on my way to achieving my dreams, but Tate changed everything.” However, Ben Moody, co-founder of Evanescence, refuted the claim that Jones’ dismissal in 2003 was tied to these allegations. He noted, “I was just 18 at the time and honestly, I didn’t realize what he was going through.”

Despite this, Jones mentioned that Tate initially helped him and Evanescence to gain meetings with industry professionals in the 90s, even during a time when Tate was struggling with substance use.

In one instance from 1998, Jones recounted a troubling experience at Tate’s home where, after feeling tired, he was encouraged to sleep in Tate’s bedroom. He alleged that he woke up to find Tate engaging in sexual acts with him. Jones noted, “I said no and pushed him away, but somehow I passed out again. When I woke up a second time, he was still at it.” He described feeling helpless in that situation.

Randall Crawford, another man who came forward, detailed his encounter with Tate in 2000. He described how Tate invited him over after a breakup and offered him whiskey. “I told him ‘just one’ but things got hazy right after I drank,” he recalled. He later found himself in a compromising position, which he described vividly, saying he remembered Tate making bizarre small talk during the incident.

Others have echoed similar sentiments, believing that they may have been drugged during their encounters with Tate. Reports suggest that at this time, Tate had a pattern of inviting young men to his home, and some have noted concerning behaviors, including inappropriate advances.

In June, Tate admitted via social media that he struggled with addiction for years and acknowledged some unwanted behavior towards men. He described his actions as regrettable, stating, “I am embarrassed by my life choices and actions.” He emphasized that he would not make excuses but acknowledged his mistakes.

Tate left Newsboys earlier this year in search of help, admitting he wasn’t in a good place mentally or physically. He mentioned spending time in a treatment facility and has been working hard on his recovery since then. However, many of the recent allegations, particularly the more severe claims, have not yet been addressed by him.
