Democrats Struggle with Leadership and Voter Discontent
Harry Enten, a senior political data reporter at CNN, expressed surprise over the Democrats’ inability to find a new leader and their ongoing disappointment among voters.
During a conversation on CNN News Central, host Kate Bolduan discussed a recent interview in which former Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with Stephen Colbert. Bolduan noted that Harris opted not to run for governor of California but hinted at a potential presidential run in 2028.
However, Enten suggests the search for new Democratic leadership has come to a halt. He described the party as “historically divided” and noted that they’re currently in a situation that feels more troubling than it should be. The phrase he used, “more troublesome than hoarding basements,” stuck out as particularly vivid.
He mused about the electoral atmosphere, saying, “The water is very warm. If you’re a Democrat thinking about running in 2028, jump in right away.” Yet, he pointed out the lack of strong candidates and the declining Democratic brand, which might discourage anyone from stepping forward.
Enten cited three similar polls indicating that Democrats are viewed unfavorably by the public, claiming they’re perceived as “complete garbage” in the hearts of Americans. One poll from Wall Street Journal noted Democrats being “30 points underwater” in approval ratings.
He believes that this sentiment stems largely from dissatisfaction within the Democratic base itself. “Democrats want something different,” he explained. “It’s really about who they choose next. The outcome will be crucial.” The landscape appears to be fraught, and what seemed like a clear path isn’t so straightforward after all.
