Tragic Loss of New Jersey Lawyer and Shipwreck Explorer
A well-known lawyer from New Jersey, who was also a notable shipwreck explorer, tragically lost his life during a deep-sea diving mission.
Joe Mazraani, 47, faced a dire incident about 200 miles offshore on July 29 while diving at the site of the “Big Engine Steamer” wreck, located on Georges Bank. The details surrounding his death were not disclosed following the company’s announcement.
An investigation is currently in progress, though early indications suggest no diver errors or equipment failure may have contributed to the tragedy.
“Joe Mazraani was larger than life. He was the kind of person who cared deeply, always generous,” described those who knew him—mentors, friends, siblings, and partners.
His dedication was evident both in his professional life and his passion for diving into challenging waters. Those who worked with him often noted he had high expectations, by no means shy about expressing them—even in a grumpy mood at times.
Mazraani co-owned Atlantic Reck Salvage with his wife, Jennifer Seritti, who serves as a public defender in New Jersey. At the time of his passing, she was on a boat, unaware of the calamity that would soon unfold.
The company recently shared a poignant photo of Mazraani alongside the bow of the D/v Tenalias, his ship used for explorations and marine rescue missions prior to his death.
Originally from Lebanon, Mazraani immigrated to the United States at 15. He became a certified diver in the mid-90s and soon developed a keen interest in exploring shipwrecks off the Northeastern coast, captivated particularly by the stories behind them.
His biography noted, “Exploring a shipwreck is Joe’s way of life.” He served as the president of Atlantic Wreck Salvage, overseeing a diving operation designed to explore and identify deep shipwrecks, including infamous sites like the U-550 and famed wrecks of the Titanic’s sister ships.
He also played a key role in the expedition of the renowned “Italian Reiner SS Andrea Adria,” as well as the wrecks of HMHS Britannic and RMS Lusitania.
A respected captain, Mazraani held an associate membership with the Boston Sea Rover, an organization focused on marine conservation and education.
Following his passing, the New Jersey Public Defense Office expressed their condolences on Friday. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Joe Mazraani, a cherished partner to public defender Celitti and a respected member of both the legal and diving communities,” they stated. “Joe was fearless, kind, and truly committed to justice. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this time.”
