US Envoy Holds Discussions with Putin Amid Tension
US Special Envoy Steve Witkov recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for a three-hour discussion. This meeting comes as President Trump has shortened the ceasefire deadline and is considering new sanctions targeting Russia as the conflict with Ukraine continues.
Witkov’s meeting took place at Vnukovo International Airport, where he interacted with Kiril Dmitriev, Putin’s point person for investment and economic cooperation. Dmitriev shared on social media after the rally that the ongoing US-Russia dialogue is deemed “constructive” and vital for global security and peace.
Putin’s aide, Yury Ushakov, remarked to Russian media that “our side has forwarded some signals, particularly concerning Ukraine, which President Trump appears to have acknowledged.”
The deadline set by Trump, now cut by 50 days, is nearing its conclusion this Friday. Should a ceasefire not be achieved, additional tariffs and sanctions may be imposed on Russia.
Witkov’s previous discussions with Kremlin officials extended for several hours and primarily focused on issues related to American prisoners in Russia, rather than resolving the nearly three-year-old conflict in Eastern Europe.
In recent weeks, Trump has shown growing frustration with Putin as peace talks have stalled. The president has also warned nations like India of potential tariff hikes on Russian goods. India and China remain major buyers of Russian oil, which is crucial for sustaining the Kremlin’s economy.
After meeting with Putin, Witkov saw Trump sign an executive order that raised Indian tariffs on Russian oil purchases by 25%.
When reporters inquired about the potential tariffs on Tuesday, Trump commented, “We’ll see what happens.” He added, “At the time, we made that decision.”
Despite ongoing calls for peace, Russian military actions against Ukraine persist. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian troops launched attacks on recreational centers in the Zaporidia region overnight, confirming at least two fatalities. Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky noted on social media that attacks have also targeted Novosilke’s gas facilities and affected the power grid in the Dnipro region.
“Whatever the Kremlin claims, they will take steps to end the war if they face adequate pressure,” Zelensky expressed after his conversation with Trump. He emphasized the need for the US, Europe, and the G7 to strengthen their influence so that a ceasefire can be established soon.
Last week, Trump indicated that he had positioned two “nuclear” submarines closer to Russian waters in response to increased tensions following remarks from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
