Mike Collins Gains Initial Advantage in Georgia Senate Race, Yet Many Voters Remain Uncertain

Rep. Mike Collins Leads in Georgia Republican Senate Race

Republican Representative Mike Collins is emerging as a frontrunner in the Georgia Republican Senate primary, based on a recent poll.

Currently serving his second term, Collins has garnered 27% support from Republican mid-term voters. He’s followed by a group of Georgia state lawmakers at 20% and former University of Tennessee coach Derek Dooley at 8%. This online poll was conducted by TIPP for Politics and shows the primary race is still quite open. Notably, 39% of voters remain undecided about who they favor to challenge Democratic Senator John Ossoff.

Republicans view Georgia as a promising opportunity to strengthen their Senate majority, which currently stands at 53 seats, in the upcoming 2026 elections. Ossoff is often regarded as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents, especially after the previous electoral success of Georgia Republicans and former President Donald Trump.

The TIPP poll indicates that Collins is trailing Ossoff by just 1 percentage point among registered voters, with Ossoff receiving 45% support compared to Collins’ 44%.

Other candidates, like Carter and Dooley, also show potential against Ossoff, trailing him by 3 and 2 percentage points, respectively. Interestingly, many voters in Georgia are still unfamiliar with these Republican candidates. The poll shows that 63% of registered voters have no opinion on Dooley, while Collins and Carter stand at 58% and 56%, respectively.

This investigation into the race coincided with Dooley’s recent entry, which followed months of speculation about his potential candidacy. Collins has been actively campaigning since the voters began looking into contenders.

Notable figures within the Georgia Republican Party are rallying behind Collins, signaling a growing base of support for his campaign. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, along with Georgia Senate Majority Leader Jason Anavitalte and House Majority Whip James Burchett, have all endorsed Collins.

Interestingly, Trump has not yet endorsed any of the candidates in this primary, leaving all three vying for his backing.

The survey revealed that a majority of Georgia voters continue to support Trump’s immigration policies, especially regarding deportation efforts aimed at illegal immigrants. According to the poll, 55% of registered voters agree with the focus on illegal immigration as part of the deportation agenda.

The TIPP survey involved 2,956 registered voters and was conducted online from July 28 to August 1. It carries a margin of error of ±1.8 percentage points.
