Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Allow Immigration Raids in Los Angeles to Continue

Trump Administration Appeals to Supreme Court for Immigration Enforcement in Los Angeles

On Thursday, the Trump administration requested that the Supreme Court permit immigration enforcement in Los Angeles to proceed without restrictions.

The administration argues that district court judges should not have the ability to “microcontrol” how immigration laws are enforced in areas where a significant number of residents are undocumented. According to their application, “The Central District is not only the most populous district in the country, but it hosts approximately 2 million undocumented immigrants within a total population of around 20 million. This makes it a key area for enforcement efforts.” This is, perhaps, not surprising considering the administration’s focus on enforcing immigration laws in regions where investigations and detentions are prevalent.

A recent order from US District Judge Mame Eusi Mensa Frimon, who was appointed by Biden, set restrictions on enforcement, indicating that immigration actions could not be based solely on race, location, job type, or language.

The application notes, “It’s clear that no one believes that speaking Spanish or working in construction inherently creates reasonable suspicion.” While not everyone thinks federal agents are the only consideration, these factors can definitely raise the likelihood of someone’s undocumented status in the U.S.
