Trump Proposes National Guard Intervention in Washington, D.C.
On Monday, President Donald Trump shared plans to reinforce National Guard forces and assume control of the metropolitan police in Washington, D.C., following a ramped-up federal law enforcement presence that began over the weekend.
“We are deploying the National Guard to help restore law, order, and public safety in Washington, D.C.,” Trump stated during a press conference. He emphasized that they would be empowered to do their jobs effectively.
Trump also indicated that he would federalize the local police department to better address crime issues. Typically, National Guard forces operate under state governance and are called upon for emergencies such as natural disasters. However, Trump had previously sent troops from California to address immigration protests, bypassing the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.
The District of Columbia’s National Guard is under federal oversight. Trump’s announcement came shortly after he declared on social media that he would ensure Washington would be “freed” from crime and violence. He remarked, “The innocent people are finished with merciless murder and hurt!”
This move follows a troubling incident on August 3, where a former government employee faced a violent attack in Logan Circle, motivating Trump to seek military support for enhanced crime management.
“What a shameful thing — crime rates, robbery, murder rates, etc. We’re not going to allow it, including possibly bringing in the National Guard, and perhaps quickly,” Trump commented. He further expressed his readiness to take control of the local police department.
While a federal takeover of the police can be justified in emergencies, Trump’s action may face legal challenges about whether the situation in Washington qualifies as such. Historically, Trump has condemned violence in the city, and he remarked on Tuesday that crime was “completely out of control.”
Interestingly, recent data shows crime in Washington is actually declining. Reports indicate that violent crime has decreased by 26% this year compared to the same period in 2024. Similarly, weapon-related assaults dropped by 20%, and murders fell by 12%.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser responded to Trump’s portrayal of the city’s crime issue during an MSNBC interview, questioning the rationale behind revitalizing the National Guard for urban crime prevention. “Comparisons with war-torn countries are hyperbolic and false,” she stated, raising concerns about the efficiency and effectiveness of employing the National Guard in this manner.
