Federal agents dismantle sex, labor, and drug trafficking operation involving illegal Indian immigrants in Nebraska

Federal Authorities Make Arrests in Trafficking Scheme

Federal authorities in Nebraska have arrested a group of Indian nationals suspected of being involved in serious trafficking offenses, including labor and drug trafficking, as well as exploitation based on gender. This widespread scheme allegedly involved entities not just in Nebraska but also in Georgia and Texas.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska revealed the arrest of five Indian individuals following a lengthy investigation. A 65-page indictment has been filed, alleging that these individuals managed a network of hotels, motels, and beauty salons, where they purportedly exploited illegal immigrants. Those immigrants were reportedly coerced into providing labor and services to cover their living expenses, according to reports.

The arrested individuals include:

  • Kentakumar Chaudhari, A/K/A Ken Chaudhari, 36, from Elkhorn, NE;
  • Rashmi Ajit Samani, A/K/A Falguni Samani, 42, also from Elkhorn;
  • Amit Prahladbhai Chaudhari, A/K/A Amit, 32, from Omaha;
  • Amit Babubai Chaudhari, 33, from Omaha;
  • Maheshkumar Chaudhari, A/K/A Mahesh, 38, from Norfolk, NE.

The arrests took place across 14 businesses and two residences linked to the suspects. The indictment outlines various charges, including sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and drug trafficking.

U.S. Attorney Leslie Woods emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “There’s no greater evil than the kind that seeks to enslave and exploit humans for profit.” This reflects a commitment from law enforcement at all levels to combat such activities.

As part of this investigation, agents from the FBI and ICE have rescued ten minors believed to be victims of labor trafficking. The indictment highlights disturbing accounts, such as a 12-year-old girl forced to work as a housekeeper for minimal wages in a long-term care facility.

Additionally, 17 adult victims were also freed from this operation. The court documents describe the harsh living conditions imposed on these individuals, who were allegedly made to pay for their accommodations in filthy and unsafe environments.

In troubling revelations, a source working undercover reported entering a hotel room where an immigrant victim was found sleeping on a roach-infested floor. This paints a grim picture of the conditions involved.

The indictment also contains serious allegations about how sex trafficking was allegedly tolerated at these hotels. It claims that not only were victims coerced into sexual activities, but even hotel staff were involved in exploiting these individuals.

Two minors described being transported from out of state and coerced into commercial sexual acts. They reported being forced to rent rooms or engage sexually with hotel employees to secure a place to stay.

One former employee mentioned witnessing a front desk worker being coerced into sex acts to keep her room, while another detailed seeing underage girls soliciting sex in exchange for room discounts.

Security cameras were apparently manipulated to create blind spots in areas used for prostitution.

In yet another disturbing account, a woman staying at one of these locations was shown a video of herself being assaulted, allegedly recorded by hidden cameras in the room.

Drug trafficking was also a part of this broader operation. Documents indicate that overdoses were commonplace, prompting one hotel to keep Narcan on hand. Eyewitness accounts suggest drug use was rampant in the vicinity of the hotels.

The indictment notes that many of the trafficked individuals had entered the U.S. without proper immigration checks and were subsequently caught and released during the Biden-era border situation. This included both adults and children, with some arriving via the U.S.-Mexico border.

During the investigation, authorities uncovered that conspirators charged up to $79,000 for transporting individuals from India to the United States. Astonishingly, they even plotted to stage a fake robbery to help one illegal alien apply for a U visa.

Authorities have seized over $565,000 during the investigation and are pursuing legal action to confiscate several properties associated with the trafficking schemes.

FBI Special Agent Eugene Correll remarked, “Human trafficking represents a form of modern slavery. This investigation reveals the degree of exploitation victims endured.”

ICE HSI Special Agent Mark Zito added, “We’re determined to bring those who prey on vulnerable individuals to justice.”

The collaborative investigation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and various local law enforcement bodies.

In closing, U.S. Attorney Woods stressed, “When law enforcement teams work together, no organized crime network within Nebraska can evade justice.”
