Woman killed in northeast DC during Trump's federal police control

Daytime Shooting in Washington, D.C.

A woman was shot and killed during the day in northeastern Washington, D.C., an area where many locals feel generally safe, despite the Trump administration’s efforts to address crime in the capital.

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers discovered her shortly after 11 a.m. in the 3300 block of 15th Avenue, where she had been struck multiple times. Emergency services transported her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Though homicide detectives are looking into the case, no suspects have yet been named.

In a related move, President Donald Trump on Monday federalized the MPD under Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, effectively allowing him to take emergency control over police operations for 30 days.

FBI Director Kash Patel voiced support for Trump’s decision, stating, “When you make a good cop a police officer, they deliver.”

Just hours later, in a nearby neighborhood, another incident occurred: a man named Tymark Wells, aged 33, was also shot multiple times and died shortly after the attack.

This raises some questions— is there an uptick in violence despite claims of overall safety? Mayor Muriel Bowser noted that violent crime rates are the lowest in three decades, while specific statistics reveal a troubling rise in gun violence in particular neighborhoods. For example, the Golden Triangle saw a 240% increase in violent gun crimes between 2022 and 2023.

As a precautionary measure, hundreds of National Guard members have been deployed alongside various federal agencies, including the FBI and DEA, in response to rising crime rates.

Trump hinted at the possibility of Congress declaring a state of emergency, mentioning, “We can’t do it for 30 days. We want to expand. I don’t want to call the country’s emergency, but if necessary, I will.”
