National Guard sent to Washington as officials boost efforts to tackle crime

National Guard Mobilized in Washington, D.C.

As of Wednesday afternoon, around 400 members of the D.C. National Guard have reported for missions in the capital, following President Trump’s directive to ensure that Washington is “safe, clean, and beautiful.” More National Guard members are expected to arrive later in the day and on Thursday, with an increased presence anticipated Wednesday evening. By the end of the week, up to 800 active personnel are anticipated to have been deployed.

Since the orders issued on August 7 to “federate” D.C. and intensify crime control efforts, law enforcement officials have made over 100 arrests. This proactive approach included heightened visibility on the streets.

Efforts in D.C. to Address Homelessness and Crime

On Wednesday evening, military vehicles were spotted near the National Mall, with security personnel gathering at the D.C. Armory before deploying to various crime-prone areas, such as Anacostia in southeastern D.C. In addition to this, Trump has placed the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal authority, a move authorized under the Home Rules Act for a duration of up to 30 days.

On Monday, 23 arrests were made involving serious charges including attempted murder and gun-related offenses. The following day, there were 43 additional arrests, alongside the seizure of 24 firearms.

Initially, only 30 National Guard troops were active on Tuesday evening, yet over 1,450 personnel—including 750 local police officers and other federal agents—were engaged in operations.

From Wednesday night onward, enforcement operations will continue around the clock.

Addressing Broader Concerns in the Capital

This operation spearheaded by the White House aims to combat not just crime but also homelessness in the district. D.C. Federal Parks, which fall under National Park Service authority, face strict messaging: individuals must either leave, seek shelter, or face arrest.

Trump has referred to this federal involvement as pivotal for the capital, stating, “D.C.’s release date” has arrived, and expressing intentions to reclaim control of the city.
