Governor Newsom: California will continue redistricting plans to effectively ‘BRING AN END TO THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY’

Newsom Advances Redistricting Efforts

California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed intentions to progress California’s districting strategies, despite a strong inclination to maintain the state’s independent district commission.

This initiative is part of a broader “for the Tut” rezoning strategy, with other Democratic states like New York and Maryland contemplating similar actions. The aim is to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections, as multiple states are currently engaged in redistricting efforts, which could significantly influence House control during President Donald Trump’s later term.

In response to recent Republican redistricting moves in Texas, which could potentially secure five additional House seats for the GOP, Newsom has committed to pursuing similar redistricting measures in California.

“As many know, Donald ‘Taco’ Trump—the author of the art of ‘trading’—missed out on the best deal in history. He frequently mentions ‘chicken’ but, even then, should recognize a good trade when he sees it,” Newsom stated.

“My favorite governor, Gavin Christopher Newsom, has presented an incredible deal. Let’s stop rigging the Texas maps, shall we? Sadly, Donald hasn’t replied. But Patriots will take back Congress,” he added.

Newsom’s Press Office announced plans for “the largest press conference ever,” hinting at a major forthcoming announcement regarding redistricting.

“After that, the new map will be revealed. History is being made, and we will respond to the GOP strategies,” he emphasized.

His team is collaborating with state legislators to draft a new district map, believing this could lead to five additional Democratic seats to counter the Republican strategies in Texas.

Democrat Zoe Lofgren remarked, “We’re confident in our success if we proceed. There’s significant unity among Democrats on this.”

Historically, the independent commission, established under former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was designed to create districts free from political influence. Newsom’s attempts to override this commission likely require voter approval, as changes will necessitate a supermajority vote in the state legislature and Senate.

Interestingly, a recent poll indicated that just 36% of California voters support transferring the authority to redraw district lines back to state lawmakers, while a notable 64% prefer keeping this power with the independent commission.

Given the strong backing for the independent commission, Newsom has warned that control will revert back to this body following the 2026, 2028, and 2030 election cycles.

Political analysts suggest that due to the commission’s popularity, Newsom may need to launch a substantial campaign to gain voter support for his redistricting initiative.

The poll was conducted from July 28 to August 12, surveying 1,445 registered voters in California.
