South Carolina Democrats Call for Candidate to Step Down After Arrest Video
Democrats in South Carolina are urging gubernatorial candidate Mullins McLeod to reconsider his campaign following the emergence of a video documenting a troubling arrest from May. The footage, released on Tuesday through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows the 53-year-old McLeod, in just his shoes and underwear, shouting and acting erratically.
The Charleston Police Department arrested McLeod in downtown Charleston, where he reportedly yelled at the officers, claiming he was “a god” and “a superman” while referencing his gubernatorial aspirations. His demeanor, as captured in the footage, raised concerns among party officials.
One notable statement from McLeod during the incident was, “My friend, trusting me doesn’t matter. I’m one of those people who’ve walked this soil,” which seemed a bit out of context, given the situation. He also made aggressive remarks towards Republicans, including Attorney General Alan Wilson, who is also running for governor.
“I’m going to kick you [expletive],” McLeod yelled, emphasizing the seriousness of his threats.
The lengthy video chronicles his arrest and this transport to the Al Cannon detention center, where he resisted getting out of the police vehicle, insisting he would rather sleep in his car.
“No, I’m not doing that, no,” he exclaimed, continuing to refuse officers’ requests to exit the car.
Police later noted in a preliminary report that McLeod exhibited “very bloodshot and highly dilated” eyes, which officers suggested was consistent with substance influence.
A spokesperson for Charleston City reported that McLeod is facing charges for misdemeanor and disorderly conduct.
McLeod hasn’t responded directly to media inquiries but did claim to a local newspaper that his arrest was unfair and promised that voters would be informed of his version of events before the election.
In light of the incident, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Christ Charle Spain expressed concerns about McLeod’s capacity to continue in the race, stating, “It is clear that McLeod is navigating deep challenges and that instead of the governor’s campaign, the focus should be on mental and emotional well-being.” Spain expressed hope that McLeod would receive the support he needs during this difficult time.
