Virginia gubernatorial candidate Spanberger turns down debate invitation from CNN

Virginia’s former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger has declined an invitation to participate in a debate hosted by CNN against her GOP opponent, Lieutenant General Winsome Sears. CNN had planned discussions for late September or early October, but only Sears accepted the offer.

According to Spanberger’s campaign, she prefers local media to host such discussions, asserting that national platforms like CNN don’t prioritize Virginia’s issues. “We’ve declined the offer to engage with CNN to focus on discussions with Virginia broadcasters,” the campaign stated. They emphasized that conversations about the state’s future should be led by local media and accessible to Virginia residents.

Her decision attracted criticism from Sears’ camp. Payton Vogel, a spokesperson for Sears, labeled it “absurd,” claiming it reflects Spanberger’s reluctance to face voters in a more spontaneous setting. He recalled a previous debate in 2022 where Spanberger struggled under pressure. Vogel questioned, “If she can’t show up for this, what is she afraid of?”

Polling data indicates Spanberger currently holds a lead over Sears, showing about 45% support among Virginia voters, while Republican voters trail at 36%. Contextually, Spanberger’s recent political history includes a notable gubernatorial debate in 2021, which had significant implications for the outcome of that election.

That debate saw former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe under fire for rejecting a bill that would have required schools to inform parents about educational materials. This moment became a defining point of the campaign, eventually aiding in McAuliffe’s loss to Republican Glenn Youngkin.

Youngkin’s victory was noteworthy as he became the first Republican to claim the Virginia Governorship since 2009 but now cannot run again due to state laws against consecutive terms.
