Clinton Proposes Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Over Ukraine-Russia Conflict
Hillary Clinton, the former Democratic presidential candidate, stated on Friday that she would personally propose President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if peace could be achieved between Russia and Ukraine.
On the same day, Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss a potential agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted since February 2022.
Clinton mentioned during an interview with host Jessica Talloff, “I understand that [Trump] has his views. Honestly, if Putin could end this awful war—which has involved the invasion of neighboring countries—then perhaps there’s room for negotiation. If he can manage a situation where Ukraine doesn’t lose to the invaders, or if we can look beyond Putin’s vision of a Greater Russia, we could actually see some progress. This is unprecedented, yet there’s an opportunity here. It’s essential for Europe’s security that Putin withdraws from occupied territories.”
“If President Trump were instrumental in achieving this, I would support his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Clinton added.
During the 2024 campaign, Trump reiterated his commitment to ending the Ukraine war, often stating, “this wouldn’t have happened” if Joe Biden hadn’t been president. In May, negotiations were hinted at following a lengthy call with Putin.
In July, Trump, frustrated with the lack of progress, set a 50-day deadline for peace negotiations, warning of “severe” sanctions if Russia did not engage. After ongoing resistance from the Kremlin, he reduced this deadline to “10 or 12 days.”
Additionally, on August 11, Trump implemented a 50% tariff on Indian imports of Russian oil, although India has indicated a willingness to continue purchasing oil from Russia.
As a final push, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkov met with Putin on August 6 for a lengthy discussion about potential peace talks.
