Axelrod: Trump's warm welcome of Putin could upset many Americans

Axelrod Critiques Trump’s Meeting with Putin

David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Obama, expressed his views on Friday regarding President Trump’s interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He suggested that Trump’s gestures towards Putin, described as a “red carpet” welcome, could be troubling for many Americans.

In his analysis, Axelrod emphasized that the American public generally perceives Russia as a threat, particularly in light of its actions in Ukraine. He noted that many people are likely to disagree with any attempts to reach compromises that favor Russia. “What you’re showing in this film could confuse and possibly anger numerous Americans,” he remarked during a CNN segment.

Looking ahead, he pondered whether the public would view Trump as facilitating peace in a way that aligns with Ukraine’s interests or if they would see him as more sympathetic to Putin’s perspective.

During the meeting, Trump and Putin were seen greeting each other on the tarmac in Alaska before entering Trump’s armored vehicle, often referred to as “the Beast.” The atmosphere was cordial, with both leaders sharing smiles and brief exchanges.

The summit kicked off around 3:30 PM EDT, featuring discussions that included Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff, who has met with Putin multiple times this year. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and key aide Yury Ushakov were also present for the concluding meeting.

David Urban, a former adviser to Trump, commented on the dynamics of the summit, claiming it was advantageous for Trump to have Rubio and Witkoff with him. He suggested that they could offer differing viewpoints, allowing Trump to navigate negotiations more effectively. “It gives him a chance to play the peacemaker,” Urban explained.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not part of the discussions, shared his perspective that Moscow shows no signs of wanting to conclude the ongoing conflict. He highlighted the lack of any real signals from Russia that suggest an end to the war, stating, “The war continues without any indication from Moscow that they are prepared to stop.”
