Five insights from the Trump-Putin meeting

Speculation swirled on Friday following a landmark summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly regarding their discussions about ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The two leaders engaged in a three-hour meeting at Elmendorf Richardson’s joint base in Anchorage, Alaska. Yet, the details of their discussions remain largely undisclosed. At a subsequent press conference, they both kept mum about the specifics, and there were no questions taken from the media.

Here are five key takeaways from the summit:

Progress, but No Ceasefire Agreement

During the press conference, Trump emphasized that their meeting was “productive,” although he avoided providing specifics about what was covered. He stated, “I think we had a very productive meeting. There were a lot of points we agreed to. Most of them, well, we haven’t reached full agreement yet, but we’ve made some progress.”

“Ultimately, it’s up to them,” Trump noted.

Putin chimed in, saying that Russia aims to eliminate what he described as the “major roots” of the conflict. He acknowledged some level of “consensus” was achieved, though he too refrained from divulging details.

“We hope that the agreements we reached will help bring that goal closer and pave the way for peace in Ukraine,” said Putin, adding that he believes Kiev and European capitals expect not to obstruct progress.

High-stakes topics, like potential U.S. sanctions against Russia, nuclear negotiations, and security guarantees for Ukraine, were not mentioned during their talks.

Trump even suggested the possibility of a second meeting, potentially including Ukrainian President Zelensky, but no concrete plans have surfaced yet.

Red Carpet Welcome for Putin

As Putin arrived, Trump literally rolled out the red carpet. His Air Force One had landed earlier, followed by Putin’s plane about a half hour later. They both walked the red carpet together in a friendly manner, with Trump clapping and greeting Putin warmly. Remarkably, Putin later claimed he addressed Trump as “my dear neighbor.”

In an extraordinary gesture, Putin entered Trump’s heavily armored presidential limousine, known as “the beast,” traveling together to the summit location. It was quite the display of camaraderie, contrasting sharply with Trump’s previous critical comments about Russian leadership.

This meeting appeared to give Putin a platform to speak first, allowing him to set the tone and make a lengthy address emphasizing the importance of U.S.-Russia relations.

Unanswered Questions Abound

Despite claims of progress, there was no clear indication from either leader regarding Russia and Ukraine’s path to a potential peace deal.

As the press conference concluded, reporters were left without answers about future meetings, including the possibility of Zelensky’s involvement or discussions on territorial concessions.

Maria Popova, a political science associate professor at McGill University, noted the ambiguity presents two scenarios: either Trump recognizes the lack of progress or is attempting to pressure Zelensky into accepting terms from Putin.

“If Zelensky and Europe resist, Trump might blame them for hindering peace,” she added.

Post-summit, Trump echoed that Zelensky needs to make concessions to finalize an agreement, mentioning the necessity of European involvement.

A Choreographed Peace Narrative

The Friday meeting was orchestrated to enhance Trump’s image as a peacemaker, highlighted by the phrase “pursuing peace” in their backdrop during the press conference.

While world leaders have expressed support for Trump’s potential nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, he has yet to resolve the conflict in Ukraine or address other global crises like the Israeli-Hamas conflict or the civil war in Sudan.

Trump insisted the meeting was successful, yet tangible results were elusive. Christina Hook, an assistant professor of conflict management, observed that Trump’s focus on “progress” might be an effort to create momentum amidst ongoing fundamental challenges.

“Until Russia acknowledges Ukraine’s sovereignty, diplomatic efforts largely feel performative,” she remarked.

Next Steps for Zelensky

Following the summit, Trump indicated plans to reach out to Zelensky and NATO allies, hoping to have future discussions with Putin as well.

Robert Mallett, a deputy director at the Institute for Security Policy Law, remarked that Europe had tempered expectations, anticipating no dramatic breakthroughs from the meeting.

Following the summit, there was no immediate feedback from Zelensky or European officials.

As the press conference wrapped up, Trump and Putin casually discussed the possibility of a future meeting in Moscow.

“Next time in Moscow,” Putin joked in English.

“Yeah, that’s interesting,” Trump replied. “I’ll need to think about that, but I know… it’s possible.”
