NYPD detectives stationed near the Park Avenue site of a tragic shooting are facing backlash following the incident. Allegations emerged online suggesting that Detective Shareka Henry had fled the scene during the chaos, but police sources refuted these claims.
At the time of the shooting, the 39-year-old was working for a private security firm assigned to 345 Park Ave. and 601 Lexington Ave. She was reportedly inside the Lexington Avenue building when Shane Tamra, the assailant armed with an AR-15, approached the Park Avenue location. Among the victims was Didarul Islam, a fellow detective.
A source involved in the investigation mentioned, “She had just seen other officers involved in the situation. She even got an iced tea from Starbucks moments before.” It seems she was still there as events unfolded.
In the days following the incident, the online chatter intensified, with social media users sharing unverified posts. One such post indicated that an armed detective had seen the shooter but subsequently ran away, a claim that circulated in police officer groups on Facebook.
The identity of the poster remains unclear, and the rumors surrounding her alleged departure raised questions during a police inquiry last Wednesday, according to sources.
Authorities reportedly analyzed security footage from NYPD Argus cameras and body cameras from responding officers, which showed Henry running toward the scene, not away from it. “The cameras caught her in the vicinity,” one source noted. “She was seen speaking with officers at the scene.”
Investigators also noted that she assisted in evacuating others from the building, guiding them to safety. Meanwhile, the Home Office revealed that she was working security for a company contracted by the Blackstone Group LP without the necessary NYPD credentials, leading to her reassignment from the Intelligence Information Bureau to Bronx detectives.
It was noted that rumors and misinformation were being spread on social media, confusing the public regarding her actions. Sources affirmed, “She certainly didn’t run away. She ran towards the danger and was affected by it.”
In a recent unrelated incident, Henry made headlines again when she was involved in a confrontation with a disruptive individual at a Starbucks in Midtown.
Attempts to reach Henry for a comment were unsuccessful.
A representative from the Detective Fund Association expressed frustration, saying, “It’s troubling how quickly some people throw others under the bus with these rumors.”
