Police detain Liverpool supporter for suspected racial abuse of Antoine Semenyo

Police in the UK arrested a Liverpool fan after an incident during the Premier League match on Friday, where Bournemouth player Antoine Semeño reported being subjected to racial abuse. The Merseyside police confirmed on Saturday that they arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offenses at Anfield.

A statement from the police indicated that the suspect was identified and escorted from the stadium following Semeño’s report. They mentioned that he was interviewed while in custody.

The incident unfolded in the first half of the game, around the 28-minute mark, while Semeño was preparing for a set piece. He spoke with the referee before reaching out to both teams’ coaches and captains regarding the situation.

Fortunately, the delay only lasted a couple of minutes. Semeño continued playing and ended up scoring both of Bournemouth’s goals in a 4-2 defeat. During halftime, a message advocating for non-discrimination was read to the crowd.

In response to the incident, Semeño shared his thoughts on social media. He expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by fans, teammates, and officials during that moment of difficulty. “The overwhelming message of support reminds me why I love the sport,” he wrote, affirming a commitment to moving forward together.

The Premier League has begun looking into the incident and has stated its intent to fully support both the players and their respective clubs.
