West Virginia to Deploy State Guard to Washington, D.C.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey announced on Saturday that the state’s National Guard will be deployed to Washington, D.C. This move supports President Donald Trump’s efforts to enhance cleanliness and public safety in the capital.
Morrissey shared that the deployment was prompted by requests from the Trump administration.
The West Virginia National Guard is equipped with essential supplies and trained personnel, comprising around 300 to 400 individuals. Funding for these missions comes from the federal government.
“West Virginia stands with President Trump to restore the pride and beauty of our nation’s capital,” Morrissey said in his statement. He emphasized that the National Guard reflects the best of the country and that this mission aligns with their shared commitment to a secure America.
On Monday, under a specific provision of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act, Trump can take over emergency police management for a period of 30 days.
Numerous National Guard members and federal law enforcement personnel, including agents from the FBI, DEA, Capitol Police, and ATF, have been deployed in D.C.
West Virginia’s Deputy Major General Jim Seward, tasked with overseeing the operation, noted that this initiative underscores their commitment to public service. He expressed readiness to support partners in the capital and contribute to creating a safe environment. The National Guard’s preparation and unique capabilities will play a crucial role in this project.
In light of the ongoing crackdown on crime, Attorney General Pam Bondy reported that around 200 arrests have been made in D.C. since the Trump administration’s intensified crime-fighting efforts began. Arrests include two suspects for murder, several for drug trafficking, illegal firearms, and even two for sexual offenses.
As for the White House, there hasn’t been an immediate response regarding this latest development.
