Man Rescued from California Waterfall After Two Days

A 46-year-old man was airlifted to safety after becoming trapped behind a waterfall in California for two days. Ryan Wardwell, from Long Beach, attempted to climb at Teacups Falls on Sunday evening but was hindered by strong hydraulic forces that dislodged him from his climbing line, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

The authorities were alerted on Monday about a missing person who had last been seen at the top of the waterfall, as he didn’t return to his vehicle. This prompted a search operation involving aircraft equipped with infrared technology, but the challenging terrain delayed their efforts until the following morning.

On Tuesday, rescuers, including divers, started their search, and drones eventually located Wardwell alive and responding behind the waterfall. The Sheriff’s Office described him as being trapped due to the extreme hydraulics in the river.

The California Highway Patrol was brought in and utilized helicopters to help ensure the climbers’ safety. After being recovered, Wardwell received treatment for dehydration and some minor injuries before being reunited with his family.

The Emergency Services Division of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder to the public to remain aware of their surroundings and capabilities while navigating river areas, particularly the Shiramizu River.

Earlier this month, another hiker required assistance after falling about 25 feet while exploring Big Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains.
