Mission President Shot in Mexico City During Robbery Attempt

The mission president of the Latter-day Saint Church in Mexico City was shot during a robbery at his home. This unfortunate incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday, involving President R. Tyler Wallis, who is 56 years old.

A church spokesperson, Sam Penrod, reported that Wallis was shot by an intruder. He has since received treatment at a nearby medical center and is currently in stable condition, with sources saying he was shot in the torso, just below his chest.

Fortunately, his wife, Elizabeth, was unharmed during the incident.

According to Penrod, the church is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the situation. He also reassured that all missionaries associated with the church are safe.

Details about the shooting remain unclear and it’s uncertain if there will be any further investigations. Penrod expressed the church’s deep concern during this difficult time, stating that their thoughts and prayers are with the Wallis family and all associated missionaries. “We appreciate the hundreds of missionaries dedicated to spreading love and peace,” he added.

Elizabeth Wallis shared on Facebook that her husband was shot twice, urging others to “wake up and pray” for his recovery. A family friend referred to Wallis’s survival as a “miracle.”

There was some medical insight shared about the shooting: the bullet reportedly entered below the sternum but somehow avoided hitting major organs or arteries.

The Wallises began their mission in Mexico City this past July, after relocating from Orlando, Florida. Previously, Wallis held a position as executive vice president at a fiber optic networking company, Summit Broadband. They have four children, though it’s unclear if any were present at the mission home during the incident.

Wallis is expected to serve in Mexico for a three-year term. The church operates several missions in Mexico, including four in Mexico City alone.
