Rubio Spars with Brennan Over Zelensky and European Leaders
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a heated exchange with “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan, accusing her of promoting “silly media stories” during a recent segment.
Brennan had expressed concern about European leaders potentially pressuring Ukrainian President Zelensky, mentioning that they’d come to support him. She tried to cut off Rubio at one point, saying, “I know there are concerns…so tomorrow we’ll have these European leaders coming as backup.”
Rubio countered, saying, “That’s not true. They’re not here tomorrow to ensure Zelensky is not bullied.”
In related news, former President Donald Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for a significant summit in Alaska aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This war, which commenced with a full-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, has led to substantial casualties, affecting both military personnel and civilians. Trump pointed out that if he were still in office, he believed the war would not have escalated, claiming he could end it on “the first day” of his presidency.
At the summit, though a ceasefire wasn’t achieved, there seemed to be some progress, with both parties agreeing to reconvene. Trump has arranged a meeting for Monday between Zelensky and European heads of state to discuss the outcomes of the summit and future steps.
Trump has also proposed a trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Zelensky. His envoy, Steve Witkov, noted that significant concessions regarding Ukraine’s security guarantees were made, indicating the Russians would commit to not infringe upon European boundaries or seek further territorial acquisitions from Ukraine.
Brennan challenged Rubio regarding a controversial Oval Office meeting involving Trump, Zelensky, and Vice President J.D. Vance, provoking tension among the leaders. Trump remarked on America’s substantial military support, saying, “If you didn’t have military equipment, this war would have ended in two weeks… you don’t have cards.” The discussion concluded prematurely, with Zelensky leaving Washington early, and some agreements were later ratified, even though expected ones were not finalized.
Throughout the interview, Rubio maintained that the accusations regarding Zelensky needing protection from coercion weren’t substantiated. He highlighted that their administration has participated in numerous meetings since that infamous Oval Office gathering.
