Rep. Eric Swalwell vows to overwhelm Republicans in redistricting battle

Swalwell Challenges Obama’s “Go High” Philosophy

Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, has taken a strong stance against former First Lady Michelle Obama’s well-known advice to “go high when they go low.” Instead, he suggested a more aggressive approach, stating that they intend to “bury Republicans” during the current district battle over Congressional maps.

During a segment on “CNN Newsroom,” host Omar Zimenez brought up Obama’s mantra while questioning lawmakers about the potential risks of the Democrats’ confrontational tactics as they seek to redraw district lines. Swalwell responded assertively: “No, when they go low, we’re going to bury them under the Capitol. That’s what we’re trying to do. This is protecting democracy. And let’s be honest, DC is militarized and we were weak as Democrats.”

The Congressman voiced concerns about recent moves by Texas Republicans to establish control and suggested that these actions could disadvantage Democrats in upcoming elections. He emphasized that responding to aggressive tactics was crucial for defending democracy and protecting vulnerable populations.

“We’ve paid a price for past weaknesses, but we can’t afford to be weak again when we have power,” Swalwell asserted. He referenced California Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to the situation, arguing that they must either react to Donald Trump’s tactics or take the initiative themselves.

Newsom has introduced a contentious proposal aimed at altering district boundaries to eliminate Republican seats in response to changes made by Texas Republicans. However, this plan conflicts with California’s constitutional requirements for nonpartisan redistricting through an Independent Commission. Democrats in California are now seeking special elections to obtain voter approval for these changes, attempting to navigate around the existing legal framework.

Though Swalwell didn’t respond to requests for additional comment, his remarks signify a shift among some Democrats, who are moving away from the “go high” philosophy. Michelle Obama herself has adjusted the sentiment in her speeches, clarifying that maintaining dignity doesn’t mean remaining passive in the face of aggression.

“Let’s be clear. To be tall doesn’t mean smiling and saying nice things when faced with viciousness and cruelty,” she stated in a speech during the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
