On Monday, a Russian airstrike devastated Ukraine, claiming the lives of ten individuals, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington, D.C. for discussions with President Donald Trump at the White House.
Among the casualties were seven children, ages ranging up to 16, as reported in a drone attack on Kharkiv, according to local officials.
This escalation was interpreted by Ukrainian authorities as a stark signal from Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating his unwillingness to halt the conflict. Zelensky’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, expressed this sentiment on Telegram, stating, “Putin revels in attacking peaceful cities while claiming he wants peace.”
The backdrop of Zelensky’s meeting with Trump was marked by this fresh wave of violence, with attacks continuing in various regions. For instance, reports confirmed at least three fatalities and nearly twenty injuries from a strike in southern Zaporizhzhia.
During the meeting with Trump, Zelensky highlighted the devastating loss of a 1.5-year-old in the recent bombardment.
The U.S. State Department has also confirmed that American citizens were among those killed by Russian aggression in Kyiv. Zelensky asserted that overcoming the Russian threat would necessitate unwavering support from American and European allies, and he reaffirmed his commitment to achieving this.
Meanwhile, it appears that Russia has recently reduced its nightly drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, a significant shift from prior months. Observers speculate that this could indicate Russia’s strategy of consolidating territorial gains in the Donetsk region before high-stakes negotiations with Trump.
Before his meeting with Putin, Trump remarked that a failure to reach a ceasefire would be “unfortunate.” While Putin seemed to dismiss a ceasefire proposal during their discussions, Trump hailed the meeting as a success, claiming they found common ground on several issues.
A UN report revealed that from December 2024 to May 2025, about 1,000 Ukrainian civilians lost their lives, including those in areas occupied by Russian forces.
