National Guard in D.C. May Affect Voter Intimidation

Concerns Over National Guard Presence During Elections

On Monday’s episode of “Laura Coates Live,” Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State and a candidate for governor, expressed worries about the impact of the National Guard’s presence in Washington, D.C., particularly concerning voter intimidation.

During her conversation with host Laura Coates, Benson noted the ongoing worries around threats faced by electoral workers. She remarked that some states, like Louisiana and Mississippi, have deployed National Guard troops to D.C. This move, she suggested, ties into broader federal policing efforts instigated under former President Trump’s administration. There’s uncertainty about how long this will continue, raising questions about its potential effects as we approach the election cycle.

Benson stated, “Yes, there’s certainly a potential concern. I come from a military family; my husband served in Afghanistan. I understand what this presence means and the message it sends regarding safety and freedom. I believe it’s essential for governors nationwide to address the implications of this situation seriously.” She emphasized that a continued military presence could threaten citizens’ basic voting rights. As the mid-terms approach, she hopes key state officials will remain vigilant in safeguarding voters against any misuse of authority.
