Unlicensed Trucker Involved in Deadly U-Turn Did Not Pass English Test

A semi-truck driver, after reportedly causing the deaths of three Americans during an illegal U-turn in Florida, failed an English proficiency test and struggled to recognize traffic signs on the road.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Transport (DOT), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has started looking into a tragic accident in Florida that resulted in the loss of three lives.

During an interview, a driver named Harjinder Singh underwent an English Proficiency (ELP) assessment. Unfortunately, Singh could only provide correct answers to two out of the twelve oral questions, and he managed to identify just one out of four traffic signs correctly, as noted in a press release.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy commented, “Had the state adhered to the regulations, this driver would not have been able to operate the vehicle, and those three lives would still be here. This incident represents a preventable tragedy, driven by reckless decisions and significant failures. The lack of enforcement and radical immigration policies have turned the trucking industry into a chaotic environment, allowing unqualified foreign drivers to operate large vehicles.”

On July 15, 2023, it was reported that Washington state issued Singh a “regular commercial driver’s license (CDL),” and then, a limited non-controlled CDL was granted in California on July 23, 2024.

Breitbart News shared that the Florida Highway Safety and Automobile Division announced that “state Troopers have obtained a criminal arrest warrant for the driver.” Singh is reported to have entered the U.S. illegally via the southern border in 2018 and subsequently secured a commercial driver’s license in California.

The state troopers have issued a criminal arrest warrant for Harjinder Singh in connection with three vehicular homicides. As part of the investigation, with assistance from Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), the troopers identified that Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 by crossing the Mexican border.

On August 12, it was reported that “a northbound semi-truck allegedly traversed all lanes” near Fort Pierce, Florida, as the driver tried to make illegal U-turns through designated “official use only” openings.

The incident occurred near Fort Pierce, Florida, on August 12, where the driver reportedly attempted to make an official use turn on the Florida Turnpike, resulting in crossing all the northbound lanes.

This fatal U-turn incident is part of a troubling trend of road fatalities linked to foreign truck drivers.

President Donald Trump’s April executive order pointed out that English proficiency should be a fundamental safety requirement for professional drivers. The order emphasizes, “They must read and understand traffic signs as well as communicate effectively with police officers, border guards, agricultural checkpoints, and weight limit stations. Drivers need to relay information to their employers and receive directions in English. This is simply common sense.”
