Charlie Kirk Claims Trump Administration Should Strongly Ensure Blue City Mayor Meets Basic ICE Requirements

Legal Tensions Between the Trump Administration and Boston’s Mayor Wu

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, expressed on Wednesday that President Donald Trump might want to consider taking legal steps against Boston’s Democratic mayor, Michelle Wu, who recently announced her refusal to comply with federal immigration regulations.

Wu made her statement on Tuesday, declining a request from Attorney General Pam Bondy that asked her to submit a plan for adhering to federal immigration laws. She claimed the administration should stop “attacking” American cities. Kirk shared his views on “Fox & Friends,” noting that we’re heading into “dangerous grounds” as sanctuary city officials, like Wu, are overtly resisting federal law enforcement.

Kirk criticized Wu’s stance, suggesting it resembles a “neo-confederate” approach, proclaiming, “We’re going to have our own laws here in Boston.” He compared her actions to those that might be seen in southern states, suggesting that if they acted similarly, there would be widespread condemnation. However, he feels there’s a double standard when it comes to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Kirk argued that the federal administration should explore “any possible legal measures” to ensure the city collaborates with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He clarified that he isn’t advocating for aggressive actions, just that the administration leverage legal routes to address the situation.

In a letter directed to Wu and other mayors, Bondi warned that failure to comply with the Department of Justice’s requests could result in the withholding of federal funds and potential civil lawsuits. She requested a commitment to federal compliance by August 19, 2025, stressing that her letter did not constitute a final agency ruling.

In response during her press conference, Wu contended that Boston operates within the law and criticized the federal government instead. She did not specify any particular law that the administration allegedly breaches, stating, “Stop attacking our cities and hiding your administration’s failures.” She claimed Boston is law-abiding, unlike the Trump administration.

Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff to the White House, warned on “Hannity” that mayors like Wu could be facing criminal charges for assisting undocumented immigrants. During a hearing in March, both Wu and Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson were reluctant to respond when asked if they would cooperate with ICE regarding illegal immigrants.
