Israel readies for an offensive on Gaza City and summons 60,000 reservists.

Israel prepares Gaza City offensive, calls up 60,000 reservists

Israeli forces announced on Wednesday that they are mobilizing tens of thousands of reservists in preparation for an extensive military operation in Gaza City, even while contemplating ceasefire proposals with Hamas, a Palestinian extremist group.

“This morning, about 60,000 reserve orders were issued as part of the next phase of Operation Gideon’s Tank, with an additional 20,000 reservists extending their service. The IDF recognizes the crucial role these reserves play in Israel’s security,” the military stated in a post on Social Platform X.

The military plans to execute “gradual, precise, and targeted” actions in areas surrounding Gaza City, which has become a primary operational center for Hamas, according to an anonymous Israeli military official.

Officials indicated that operations would take place in sections of Gaza previously untouched by soldiers, although most reserves are not expected to engage directly in Gaza City.

“The main force in this operation will primarily come from active-duty military personnel,” an official detailed, noting that five divisions will operate in Gaza, focusing efforts on the city.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized an escalation of attacks in Gaza, asserting that the country must “complete the task” and achieve a definitive victory.

Despite facing criticism from European allies regarding the planned military actions, Netanyahu is under pressure from coalition members to persist in the conflict and deal with a temporary ceasefire proposal.

Protests involving hundreds of thousands are occurring against Israeli military actions in the war-torn areas, with calls for the safe return of hostages.

As for the hostages, former captive Abel Yehod emphasized that the only way to secure their release is to confront Hamas directly, noting that many remain in captivity.

The operations near Gaza City are being described as “planned, gradual, and accurate,” with military officials asserting they are also providing food, local shelters, and extensive humanitarian aid.

A recent 60-day ceasefire proposal from Arab intermediaries has garnered Hamas’s approval, while the Israeli government is currently reviewing the offer.

Israel reports that around 50 hostages are still held in Gaza, with estimates suggesting that approximately 20 may still be alive.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatti remarked that the latest plan is comparable to one previously submitted by President Trump’s envoy. He expressed hope for a favorable response from Israel in order to address the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly regarding hunger and civilian casualties.

The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of around 250 hostages. Since then, Israeli military operations have reportedly claimed more than 62,000 lives in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health.

While Netanyahu has previously stated he opposes allowing Hamas to maintain control over Gaza, there are concerns among Israelis that such a stance might jeopardize the safety of remaining hostages.

In preparation for the operational plans in Gaza, Netanyahu’s office announced that the timeline for targeting the last terrorist stronghold and defeating Hamas will be expedited.

Netanyahu expressed deep appreciation for the reservists, their families, and all IDF personnel, stating, “We will win together.”
