Gavin Newsom’s Social Media Strategy Paying Off
Though many critics on the right mock California Governor Gavin Newsom’s social media approach, it seems to be resonating within Democratic circles.
CNN political analyst Harry Enten highlighted that Newsom’s social media campaign has significantly boosted his visibility and popularity. This aligns with a broader Democratic effort to position themselves against the likes of President Donald Trump and his followers.
Enten noted a staggering increase in Google searches related to Newsom—up 1,300% since June 1 and 500% since August 1.
Currently, Newsom is seen as a leading contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. In a recent June poll, he trails Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Kamala Harris, but his growth is notable.
“He has attracted millions of followers on social media and generated substantial search interest,” Enten commented. “He’s currently the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, and that’s likely why Democrats are looking for a champion.” He specifically mentioned the @govpressoffice account, which mimics the humor typical of Trump’s messaging while promoting Newsom’s narrative.
“Incredible! Fox News can’t stop talking about me (Gavin Newsom), my favorite American governor!!! Tonight, their entire primetime lineup was about me!” read a tweet from the account.
Enten also shared that the follower count for the account surged by 450% since mid-June. The previous spike in Google searches signifies that Newsom is capturing attention in a critical political landscape.
“At the end of the day, politics is about attention, especially if you’re eyeing 2028, and it seems that Newsom is doing well in that arena,” Enten added.
Relatedly, polls reveal a shift among Democrats; in 2017, they largely wanted to collaborate with Republicans. Now, the majority is focused on resisting GOP efforts.
The market forecasts also illustrate that Newsom’s backing for the Democratic nomination has doubled, with about 75% voicing enthusiasm for his candidacy. Interestingly, he holds a stronger appeal in polls than Harris, despite her established presence as a candidate in 2024.
“He has surpassed the former Vice President in his home state,” Enten remarked, emphasizing the upward trajectory in support for Newsom.
