On Thursday, political strategist Karl Rove discussed the implications of the ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting that a forced resolution might precipitate a crisis for President Trump’s administration.
In a recent Op-Ed for the Wall Street Journal, Rove outlined three potential scenarios that could arise from Trump’s attempts to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine. One possible outcome is the continuation of violence, leading to a potential victory for Russia over Ukraine.
Rove drew parallels between one possible scenario and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, noting that just as President Biden’s approval ratings never bounced back after that situation, Trump could similarly suffer if negotiations fail or Russia breaks an agreement.
“This third scenario is not only the worst moral and geopolitical outcome but also poses the greatest risk for the president and the GOP,” Rove remarked in his Op-Ed.
He also pointed out that the chaotic exit from Afghanistan tarnished Biden’s reputation, which never fully recovered. At one point, Biden enjoyed a 50% approval rating in July 2021.
Rove stated that a Russian victory in Ukraine would have equally disastrous consequences for Trump.
He added that Trump had committed to ending the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office and suggested that Trump had positioned himself as a significant player in international diplomacy since taking that stance.
“The president cannot step back from this role, even if he wants to,” Rove observed. “While the global community may hold Putin accountable, Trump will be blamed for allowing these events to unfold.”
Rove commended Trump for efforts to support Ukraine, though he acknowledged that achieving a successful outcome might be challenging. He mentioned that Trump would be “rewarded” for increasing defense spending for NATO allies.
Rove urged Trump to adopt a tough stance akin to Putin’s, arguing that this could help achieve a lasting peace deal that Ukraine desperately needs.
“Trump has the opportunity to conclude this disastrous conflict successfully by countering what Putin fears the most. He should reject the flattering tones of Russian leaders and demand a fair, enforceable agreement with Zelensky,” Rove asserted.
“Anything less could tarnish Trump and his party’s image.”
