Omar Criticizes Party Leadership Over Mayoral Support
Progressive members of the House, often referred to as the “squad,” have directed their criticism toward their own party leaders concerning the retraction of support for a Democratic socialist candidate in Minneapolis.
Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has voiced her concerns to the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), which is the state’s affiliate of the national Democratic Party. She pointed out “substantial failures” in the process regarding support for Omar Fate, the candidate in question.
Omar emphasized, “It’s unacceptable to withdraw DFL backing for Omar Fate.” The tension within the Democratic Party seems to be growing.
Amid ongoing inquiries, someone remarked, “I’ve never really worried about Biden’s mental state before,” drawing attention away from the main narrative.
Progressive Democrats co-signed a letter with other DFL officials to express their strong disapproval of the move, highlighting a fundamental discord between those pushing for change within the party and the existing leadership.
Omar and her colleagues lamented that it was “extremely disappointing” for Omar Fate, the first Black candidate approved by the DFL for mayor in three decades, to have their endorsement rescinded.
Interestingly, Omar Fate’s participation in the upcoming race for November 2025 has not yet been fully revealed.
Previously, Fate had identified herself as a “democratic socialist” and gained substantial party support after overcoming various other candidates in the July 2025 approval process.
She had notably surpassed Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who is in his third term. Fate has drawn parallels to fellow democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, another mayoral candidate in New York City.
However, Richard Carlbomb, chair of the DFL, did not comment on Fate’s political stance when he announced the withdrawal of support.
Omar and several progressive allies interpreted this action as indicative of a broader rift within the Democratic Party. Omar remarked on Carlbomb’s claim to promote unity within the DFL, arguing that this decision undermines that very goal.
“You have to wonder if this type of decision will discourage voters and make them feel unwelcome in our party,” Omar stated.
Efforts to reach the DFL for further comment went unanswered at the time of reporting.
