Samuel Bassaro Signs Record Contract with Orioles

The Orioles have officially welcomed Samuel Bassaro to the major leagues. They finalized a significant eight-year, $67 million contract with the rookie catcher just days after his MLB debut.

This contract will take effect starting with the 2026 season and marks the largest extension for a catcher who has yet to make a name for himself, amounting to $88.5 million, as reported.

The 21-year-old, hailing from the Dominican Republic, made his first appearance with the Orioles on August 17, showcasing his potential with five RBIs and a .286/.333/.357 batting line across four games.

It’s an encouraging beginning for this left-handed player, who signed an international deal in 2021 for a then-record $1.3 million. Since then, he has climbed the ranks and is now regarded as a top-10 prospect in baseball.

His progress has been impressive; after starting the season in Low A, he advanced to Triple A Norfolk, where he played 76 games and recorded a .270/.377/.590 line with 67 RBIs.

As he joins the Orioles, Bassaro will have opportunities to establish his role, stepping in alongside Adrie Latchman, who is currently sidelined with an oblique injury.

Interestingly, Adley Rutschman, another catcher and a potential trade candidate, is facing challenges this season, which could work in Bassaro’s favor as he seeks to solidify his position on the team.
