Boston Mayor Wu Stands Firm on Sanctuary City Status, Sparking ICE Director’s Response

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s decision to maintain the city’s sanctuary status is drawing attention from Todd Lyons, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“We’ve definitely ramped up operations, especially in sanctuary jurisdictions,” Lyons commented during a recent appearance on the Howie Carr Show. His remarks seem to indicate a strong focus on enforcing immigration laws in areas that prioritize sanctuary policies.

Lyons expressed concern about the implications of sanctuary status, stating, “Boston and Massachusetts have chosen to remain sanctuaries. But these policies don’t necessarily lead to safer streets. In fact, they can allow more criminal immigrants to remain in neighborhoods. It’s crucial to understand that we’ll always ensure a larger ICE presence here.”

These comments follow a press conference where Mayor Wu firmly rejected an ultimatum from Attorney General Pam Bondy to end the sanctuary policy by a certain deadline. Wu reiterated her commitment to the community, saying, “We are not going to abandon the values that make Boston one of the safest cities in the nation.” She added that the situation contrasts sharply with the policies of the previous administration.

The Boston Trust Act, implemented in 2014, prevents local law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration agents. This law underlies the city’s ongoing stance as a sanctuary jurisdiction.

Reports indicate that Attorney General Bondy has reached out to 32 other municipalities regarding their sanctuary policies, urging them to reconsider.

Lyons criticized Mayor Wu’s stance, claiming it endangers residents by allowing local law enforcement to overlook ICE detainees, resulting in the release of individuals who, in his view, pose a risk to public safety. “We have an obligation to keep our communities safe,” he asserted, referencing a previous operation by ICE that resulted in over a thousand arrests.

With tensions high, it seems the future of Boston’s sanctuary status will continue to be a point of contention.
