After a search lasting nearly a week, the parents of seven-month-old Emmanuel Haro have been arrested. On Friday, Jake and Rebecca Haro were taken into custody by homicide detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at their home in Cabazon, a small community near the Riverside County border.
Initially, Rebecca Haro claimed that her son was kidnapped outside a Big 5 sporting goods store on August 14. She reported that she had been assaulted and knocked unconscious by an unknown individual. When she regained consciousness, she said, Emmanuel was missing.
However, authorities noted several inconsistencies in her account, leading to suspicions of foul play, as indicated by the sheriff’s office. They stated, “Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview.” Investigators expressed concerns about the possibility of foul play in Emmanuel’s disappearance.
In interviews last week, both parents had made emotional pleas for their son’s safe return. Some observers, though, accused them of putting on a “performative” display for public sympathy, which raised eyebrows.
“If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops,” Rebecca pleaded during an interview, visibly distressed and sporting a noticeable black eye.
Despite their previous appeals, the sheriff’s office confirmed the couple’s arrest on suspicion of murder. They have since been charged, and tragically, authorities believe Emmanuel is already deceased. A spokesperson mentioned that the priority now lies in recovering his remains.
Arrest warrants were issued by the Riverside County Superior Court, leading to the arrests of Jake and Rebecca Haro on August 22. They are now booked in a Riverside County jail without bail, and the search for Emmanuel continues as there are no other suspects involved in this case.
“While these arrests mark a significant development, our focus remains on finding Emmanuel,” the sheriff’s office stated. Sheriff D. Shannon Dicus expressed the tragedy of the situation and thanked the community and media for their involvement in bringing attention to the case, expressing confidence in the justice system to hold the parents accountable.
Notably, Jake Haro has a troubling history with the law. In 2023, he served six months for a charge of willful child cruelty involving Emmanuel’s older half-sister, who suffered serious injuries as an infant.
