It seems that what looked like ordinary hardware stores in Los Angeles were actually fronts for a huge cargo theft operation, with police estimating the value of stolen goods at around $4.5 million. This operation targeted items from trains, trucks, and cargo ships.

The LAPD revealed that DJ General Tool & Wire, with locations in Montebello and Huntington Park, was involved in a network of organized crime that focused on high-value products transported throughout Southern California.

The inventory taken included power tools, e-bikes, and appliances from well-known brands like Dyson, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita, as noted by investigators.

Dojoon Park, a 41-year-old shopkeeper from Montebello, has been arrested on charges of receiving stolen property. Authorities have been building a case against him for some time, anticipating serious charges could result in a lengthy prison sentence.

District attorney Nathan Hochman mentioned at a press conference that they are still evaluating all the crimes committed by Park and expect to formalize the accusations soon.

This crackdown reflects ongoing efforts to combat increasingly sophisticated cargo thefts that have struck Los Angeles’ transportation hubs in recent years.

Collaboration between Union Pacific Police, Los Angelesport Police, and LAPD has helped link some theft incidents to products sold in the hardware stores and through Park’s online business.

Police Chief McDonnell emphasized that cargo theft affects much more than just immediate profits. It impacts retailers and distributors, ultimately touching everyone, which is why maintaining the integrity of the supply chain is essential for public safety and economic stability in Los Angeles.

Hochman also warned others involved in similar crimes, promising a strong stance against anyone connected to cargo theft and fencing—where stolen items are sold, often at a discount, to unsuspecting buyers. The term “fence” refers to those who act as intermediaries in stolen goods transactions.

The investigation into DJ General Tool & Wire is ongoing, with law enforcement committed to making more arrests as they aim to dismantle the entire network.

LAPD Deputy Director Alan Hamilton announced plans to target all aspects of the theft operation, from initial theft to the final sale. He stated that everyone involved will likely face arrest and prosecution.

The recent hardware store bust adds to LAPD’s significant cargo theft recovery efforts this year, which have totaled nearly $4 million, including the seizure of $2.7 million worth of Bitcoin mining computers.

Detectives have noted an evolution in how these criminal operations plan and execute their thefts, utilizing dual locations to process and distribute stolen goods while masquerading as typical hardware retailers.
