Former DNC chair Donna Brazile criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s social media strategy against President Donald Trump during a discussion on Sunday, emphasizing, “These are serious times.”
While hosting ABC’s “This Week,” Jonathan Karl highlighted one of Newsom’s posts, which seemed to mimic Trump. He asked Brazile if this approach was appropriate. Brazile replied, “Everyone enjoys a good laugh, but now it’s like he’s selling his own merchandise. These are serious issues requiring serious people at the discussion table.”
Brazile pointed to Newsom as part of a broader conversation about how Democrats have lost numerous registered voters. She referred to a New York Times article discussing this trend.
“Democrats have outsourced many responsibilities to external organizations, which haven’t strengthened voter registration. This is a wake-up call. Starting in Minnesota, we need to refocus on the basics. To succeed in the White House, Democrats will need a fresh strategy,” she stated.
Another panelist remarked, “We completely agree with Brazile. A serious president demands a serious counterpart, so Governor Newsom isn’t just mimicking Trump.”
Comedian Bill Maher spoke favorably of Newsom’s tactics on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” expressing that the governor has a unique understanding of American culture today.
Maher urged, “Don’t just gather people; you have to take the fight to them.” However, some guests on the show questioned whether Newsom’s tactics were wise. Frank Bruni remarked, “Since Trump’s rise in 2015, the Democrats have often disrespected him as part of their strategy.”
Newsom’s social media posts and his team’s accounts echo Trump’s style, which has generated a variety of reactions.
Recently, Newsom shared a product link featuring a red hat with the slogan, “Newsom was right about everything.”
An MSNBC opinion piece suggested that Newsom’s approach could be an effective one, reflecting a distinct effort from politicians often seen as serious in nature.
