Florida Trials Armed Drone System to Address School Shootings

Florida Schools Testing Drone Response Systems for Active Shooter Scenarios

Several school districts in Florida are set to trial drone response systems designed to deal with active shooters more effectively. This technology aims to deter threats and create a buffer for law enforcement to arrive at the scene.

The drones, developed by Campus Guardian Angel, a manufacturer based in Texas, can be activated within just five seconds after a silent alarm is triggered. The company claims that these drones can confront a shooter in under 15 seconds. When not actively in use, the drones will be kept on charging pads across the campus, controlled remotely by staff at the company’s Austin headquarters.

Justin Marston, CEO of Campus Guardian Angel, likened the drones to traditional sprinkler systems found in schools. He explained that just as sprinklers provide immediate response in case of a fire, the drones are there for quick action, even as the required authorities are on their way. He mentioned that thankfully, large fires are rare in schools that could harm many children.

The system’s speed relies heavily on having numerous drones at each campus. According to Marston, there could be between 30 to 90 drones stationed throughout each school. These drones are designed with agility, reaching indoor speeds of up to 50 mph and equipped with features like glass breakers that help them navigate obstacles.

Each drone comes with pepper spray pellets intended to incapacitate attackers temporarily. If that doesn’t suffice, the drone itself can be used as a weapon. Marston explained that the drones would provide live video feeds to police, allowing for clearer situational awareness without causing distractions, like breaking additional windows.

However, the integration of drones poses some logistical and ethical challenges. Coordinating actions between remote drone pilots and local law enforcement during a crisis can be tricky and could waste precious time. There are also concerns regarding the operators’ familiarity with drone mechanics, their training status, and their ability to make critical decisions based on the unique layouts of each school. Moreover, issues of drone connectivity and reliability are critical, as stability is essential during emergencies. The presence of drones might even escalate tensions, potentially provoking shooters to act more erratically.

Recently, the company showcased the system at two Florida high schools. This initiative was funded with $557,000 approved by Governor Ron DeSantis as part of the 2025 budget. Permanent installations are planned for September and October, with the aim to have live operations fully functioning in exam schools by January.
