Lisa Cook Challenges Termination by Trump

Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, is reportedly suing after being fired by President Donald Trump amid allegations of mortgage fraud.

Cook faces accusations of incorrectly labeling two properties as her main residence to obtain better loan terms on mortgages taken out in 2021, prior to her appointment at the Fed.

Bill Pulte, who heads the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), was the first to bring these allegations to light, claiming Cook misrepresented her primary residence on her mortgage applications and subsequently referred the case to the Department of Justice.

Despite Trump’s order for her removal, which he announced via a letter shared on Truth Social, Cook’s attorney stated she is unequivocally rejecting the directive. Trump had called for her resignation just days before making the formal move.

The former president justified his decision by citing his constitutional authority and the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, which allows the president to remove Fed governors “for cause.” He claimed there was significant evidence suggesting Cook made false statements in her mortgage agreements and argued that her immediate removal was necessary for the law’s enforcement.

Following the announcement of her firing, Cook retained attorney Abbe Lowell, who has previously represented notable Democratic figures like Hunter Biden and Letitia James.

“President Trump has taken to social media to once again ‘fire by tweet,’ and his approach, driven by bullying, lacks proper procedure or legal standing. We will take all necessary actions to counter this illegal attempt,” Lowell remarked in a statement.

Pulte, an appointee of Trump overseeing agencies that manage Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, alleged that Cook falsely claimed primary residences in both Ann Arbor and Atlanta to secure better mortgage rates in 2021.

“It’s quite strange to see people twisting themselves to justify mortgage fraud, which is a serious crime. It can lead to sentences of up to 30 years,” Pulte commented during an interview on “Mornings with Maria.” He expressed that he believes Trump had valid reasons to fire Cook and emphasized that anybody, regardless of party affiliation, would face scrutiny for mortgage fraud.

On August 15, Pulte submitted a criminal referral to the Justice Department, suggesting Cook had falsified property records and banking documents.

Political analysts suggest that the dispute over Cook’s firing could ultimately reach the U.S. Supreme Court, though the Federal Reserve Act maintains that a sitting president can terminate Federal Reserve Board members “for cause.”

“President Trump claims to have fired me ‘for cause’ without any legal justification, and I refuse to resign. I will continue my duties to benefit the American economy, as I have since 2022,” Cook stated in response.
