Democratic Mayor Praises Trump’s Crime Initiative
During a press conference on Wednesday, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her gratitude for President Donald Trump’s efforts to address crime in the city.
Trump’s announcement on August 11 of a “public safety emergency” included plans to deploy the National Guard and federal oversight of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Bowser noted that this influx of resources significantly aided the MPD, especially leading to a notable decrease in carjackings.
“We truly appreciate the boost in resources aimed at enhancing MPD’s capabilities in our city. One of our main focuses today is tackling the most pressing crime issues we face in 2023,” said Bowser. “While we’ve made progress over previous years, carjackings have been particularly challenging. However, during this recent surge, we saw an impressive 87% reduction in carjackings compared to last year.”
She added, “When carjackings decrease, along with gun violence and robberies, neighborhoods feel safer. That’s why this surge was crucial for us.”
The statistics from the D.C. Police Union revealed a 42% drop in robberies in the first two weeks of Trump’s crackdown. Since the initiative began, 1,170 arrests have been made, including eight gang members. During a report on Wednesday, Reagan Lease commented that among 84 arrested individuals, 40 were illegal immigrants.
An opinion poll from Harvard Cap/Harris released on Monday indicated that 54% of registered voters approved of declaring a state of criminal emergency and of deploying the National Guard.
Initially, Bowser had expressed discontent with Trump’s federal intervention, calling for local governance during a press briefing.
On Friday, Trump suggested that changes might be necessary if Bowser did not manage crime effectively in the capital, using stark language to describe the city’s challenges.
He remarked, “Mayor Bowser will need to take immediate action; otherwise, she risks losing her position. Washington has become overrun with crime, and we are committed to addressing it.”
