Cardi B Testifies in Lawsuit Over Alleged Altercation
Alhambra, California – Cardi B testified on Wednesday regarding an alleged incident where a security guard claimed she was injured during a confrontation outside an obstetrician’s office during her first pregnancy.
“I didn’t touch her so she couldn’t hurt me,” Cardi stated during her second day of testimony at the Los Angeles County Courthouse.
Lawyer Ron Rosen Yangfaza, representing the plaintiff, inquired if Cardi felt angry. “Yes, I was mad! Because I’m pregnant!” she replied, expressing frustration over the situation. She recounted how the argument escalated intensely, describing a sort of back-and-forth situation, yet insisted the altercation never turned physical. “She didn’t touch me,” Cardi clarified, explaining that although the other person seemed ready to engage, it never happened.
Cardi mentioned she was in Los Angeles in February 2018 for the NBA All-Star Game, four months pregnant with her first child. She revealed that she was discreet about her pregnancy, sharing the news only with close friends and not her parents or the public.
The doctor’s office had been closed to ensure her privacy.
According to Cardi, the security guard, named Ellis, followed her after her appointment. Cardi heard Ellis saying her name on the phone, suggesting she was recording her, which made Cardi anxious given her condition. “I asked her, ‘Why are you recording?'” she recalled, noting that Ellis apologetically acknowledged her mistake.
However, the confrontation intensified. Cardi described a situation where Ellis was allegedly invading her personal space, emphasizing their similar heights but noting that Ellis was more robust. “She’s packing on a lot of security,” Cardi remarked, indicating that Ellis appeared equipped to maintain order in the building.
During friendly questioning from her lawyer, Cardi explained her initial urge to keep her pregnancy private, especially after gaining fame from her hit “Bodak Yellow.” “I was really concerned about how everyone would react,” she admitted, highlighting the importance of privacy regarding her medical matters, particularly during such a personal time.
A significant part of her testimony involved discussing her acrylic nails. “It was a form of flair, not something harmful,” she insisted, adding that they weren’t sharp.
Earlier, Ellis testified that the encounter left her feeling humiliated and that she required cosmetic surgery for her injuries. She is seeking damages, which may encompass her medical costs, emotional pain, and lost wages, claiming $24 million from Cardi for the incident.
Tierra Malcolm, a receptionist at the doctor’s office, testified that she intervened during the argument and confirmed Cardi’s account of events, stating there was no physical altercation. Malcolm later observed a scar on Ellis’s face, which she assumed resulted from the encounter.
When asked to characterize the argument, Malcolm expressed uncertainty about swearing in court, prompting laughter from Judge Ian C. Husselman, who appreciated the levity in the courtroom.
The proceedings are taking place in a small courthouse in Alhambra, where celebrity trials are quite rare. The trial is expected to continue into the following week.
