Murray criticizes Border Patrol for detaining wildfire crew members: ‘Immigration policy is seriously flawed’

Murray rips Border Patrol arrests of wildfire crew members: 'Immigration policy is fundamentally sick'

Sen. Patty Murray Critiques Trump Administration Over Arrests of Firefighters

On Thursday, Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) spoke out against the Trump administration following reports that two wildfire crew members, involved in battling the Bear Gulch fire in Olympic National Forest, were arrested.

The Seattle Times reported that, on Wednesday, these private contractors were approached by immigration officers who sought their identification while they were actively trying to manage Washington’s largest wildfire.

Murray expressed her dismay in a statement, saying, “The Forest Service has lost vital support staff, and now we’re putting our wild firefighters at risk. It’s shocking to see them detained during their critical work.”

She further criticized the administration’s immigration policies, labeling them “fundamentally sick” and inappropriate in this context.

In response to the situation, Oka reached out to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and the Border Patrol Office in Port Angeles, the agencies in charge of these operations.

Witnesses at the scene indicated that federal agents restricted the crew’s movement, which was documented by the Seattle Times. One unnamed firefighter expressed frustration, stating, “We put our lives on the line to protect our community. This is how we’re treated.”

As of Wednesday, the fire had scorched around 9,000 acres, with local authorities reporting an 87% suppression rate.

Murray emphasized the critical nature of their work, saying, “In the Pacific Northwest, wildfires can devastate entire towns. We depend on these courageous firefighters to keep us safe.”

She then raised concerns about what might come next, questioning whether the administration would start detaining more immigrants amid ongoing firefighting efforts. The Washington state lawmaker stated she had reached out to the Trump administration for immediate clarification on the status of the detained firefighters and the current immigration enforcement policies in place during wildfires.
