Liberty Triumphs Over Mystic Post-Injuries

The New York Liberty, led by Isabel Harrison’s impressive return after an 18-day absence, improved their record to 24-15 on Thursday with a decisive 89-63 win against Mystic.

In her pre-game press conference, coach Sandy Brondello had a familiar routine—she had to go over a lengthy list of injury updates.

Notably, starters Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones were dealing with issues. Ionescu sustained a left toe injury during Wednesday’s practice, while Jones woke up feeling unwell on Thursday morning.

With Natasha Cloud sidelined due to a fractured nose and Nyara Sabally out with a right knee issue, the team was down to just eight available players.

Interestingly, it seems like only one player has been active throughout all 39 games this season.

“It’s not something we can control,” forward Leonie Fevich commented. “I just hope they recover soon. But as Sandy always says, this creates chances for those who don’t get a lot of playing time. I’m looking forward to seeing them step up.”

Despite these challenges, Liberty managed to pull together a complete team effort. Even without their two main ball handlers, they effectively moved the ball and kept turnovers low, with only eight committed throughout the game.

The bench contributed significantly as well, scoring 35 points that provided a crucial boost.

Harrison, who missed the last seven games due to a concussion, was instrumental in the victory, scoring a season-high 16 points, including two three-pointers. She also tallied five rebounds and two assists.

Emma Meesman followed closely with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Marine Johannes added 14 points and five assists. Stephanie Talbot also had a standout performance, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Looking ahead, Liberty is set to embark on a three-game West Coast trip, kicking things off with a match in Phoenix on Saturday.
