White House Envoy Holds Productive Talks with Ukrainian Officials in New York
White House envoy Steve Witkoff met with Ukrainian officials in New York City on Friday for what was described as “very productive and constructive” consultations. This was ahead of an emergency national security board meeting in Kiev.
Witkoff had discussions with Andry Yermack, the head of Ukraine’s President’s office, and Sergiy Kyslytsya, the Ukrainian ambassador.
Recently, Russian attacks have intensified, with officials stating that at least 17 people were killed and 48 injured in Kiev during a large-scale assault on Wednesday night.
A senior manager familiar with the conference noted that Yermack and Kyslytsya provided Witkoff with updates regarding the current wartime situation, including the latest Russian assaults.
Ukrainian officials also extended an invitation to Witkoff for a future visit to Ukraine.
Witkoff is said to continue working closely with Ukrainian authorities to address critical issues, and they are reportedly “making progress.” According to Trump administration officials, the meeting served as an important status update and reaffirmed the commitment to achieving an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to bring an end to the conflict.
Witkoff’s diplomatic skills have received praise from various officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed that Witkoff is a vital member of President Trump’s team, integral in advancing his diplomatic goals.
Rubio mentioned how Witkoff’s “unique perspective” opens up new diplomatic opportunities. He noted it was impressive to see Witkoff’s proactive approach as a colleague in diplomacy.
British national security adviser Jonathan Powell also commended Witkoff, reflecting on his extensive experience in peace negotiations. Powell commented on the value of building trust among leaders, emphasizing that true peace often comes from quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts—a trait Witkoff embodies.
In a separate commentary, Jared Kushner, a former senior adviser to Trump, highlighted Witkoff’s ability to tackle complex challenges with determination and creativity, though an anonymous source noted that Witkoff lacks direct experience with the Ukraine-Russian conflict.
Vice President JD Vance defended Witkoff, asserting that he has made more progress toward ending the conflict than his critics. Vance characterized Witkoff as a natural diplomat and accused detractors of being threatened by his success.
Following Witkoff’s meetings in New York, Ukraine called for an emergency business briefing at the UN Security Council, prompted by the recent aerial attack on Kiev. Several member states supported the request.
Reports have indicated that Russia used close to 600 drones and over 30 missiles in their recent offensive, which came shortly after a meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where discussions about territorial concessions were raised.
Trump has been active in coordinating further negotiations, aiming to facilitate a meeting among Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and himself. While the situation remains tense, Zelensky criticized Russia for opting for aggression over negotiation, asserting the need for accountability and further sanctions against Russia for its ongoing actions.
As tensions escalate, the pursuit of diplomatic solutions continues amid the backdrop of violence, highlighting the challenges that lie ahead in achieving peace.
